Historic Stagville State Historic Site hosts this annual reading of Frederick Douglass’ speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” Volunteers deliver the address in full, inviting reflection on the nation’s history as the country marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
The program takes place in front of the historic slave quarters and Great Barn at Horton Grove, which attendees may explore afterward. Bring a chair or blanket and experience Douglass’ powerful, enduring words, first delivered on July 5, 1852.
