Runners, walkers and four-legged teammates will take to the trails of Carolina North Forest on Sunday, Oct. 18, for Howl at the Hill Ruff Run, a community event combining trail running, canine teamwork, public-safety dogs and fall family fun.
The event begins at 8 a.m. with a 4K trail run featuring eight optional “Ruff Obstacles” designed to give people and their dogs a unique outdoor challenge. A 1-mile Fun Run/Walk begins at 8:30 a.m., providing a shorter and more casual option for participants. Dogs are welcome but are not required to participate.
Howl at the Hill will take place at Carolina North Forest, 122 Municipal Drive, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Beyond the races, attendees will have opportunities to learn more about working and service dogs, meet K9 teams, visit local businesses and makers at the Bark Market, enjoy refreshments and participate in costume and event prizes.
The Ruff Run format emphasizes participation rather than perfection. Each dog-and-human team completes the course individually, and obstacles are optional. Participants who are unable or do not wish to complete an obstacle may simply move on to the next. Dogs participating in the race must remain leashed, be current on vaccinations and be comfortable around other people and dogs.
The event is organized, managed and hosted by OGK9 LLC. Fifty percent of the proceeds from every Ruff Run and Fun Walk/Run ticket sold will be donated to Public Safety Dogs Inc., a nonprofit organization supporting police and public-safety working dog programs, including animal-care needs such as shelter improvements, food and medications.
The remaining proceeds will support the planning, operation and development of the North Carolina Disaster Dog Training Center in Orange County, an initiative focused on strengthening resources and training opportunities for working-dog teams.
Howl at the Hill also provides an opportunity to introduce the public to the roles dogs can play in public safety, disaster response and community service while creating an approachable event for experienced runners, recreational walkers, dog owners and families.
