Just five miles apart on the backroads of Cedar Grove, North Carolina, are two extraordinary producers: Botanist & Barrel/DeFi Wines and Boxcarr Farm. Both share a commitment to craftsmanship, sustainability and celebrating the flavors of North Carolina.
Botanist & Barrel and DeFi Wines are the South’s first natural cidery and winery. Everything they produce begins with locally grown fruit, including heirloom apples, muscadines and blueberries grown spray-free on their own farm or sourced from neighboring growers who share their commitment to sustainable farming. As the makers say, “We make cider the slow way, with fruit that never needed fixing.” Their ciders and wines are wild-fermented, unfiltered, gluten-free, never pasteurized and alive with character — a little rebellious, a little refined and always real.
Boxcarr Farm began with a simple dream and a patch of stubborn Southern red clay: to bring a family together while creating something meaningful, delicious and a little wild. What started as a modest farm has grown into a thriving family endeavor. Inspired by small Italian farmstead creameries, the farm blends its own goat milk with locally sourced cow’s milk from nearby family dairies to craft cheeses that tell the story of the land, the livestock and the people behind them. From soft, bloomy squarelets to aged Boxcarr blocks, every cheese celebrates the seasons and the dedication of the family members who pour their hearts into each batch.
