Dry January in The Triangle

Here are a few spots that offer special mocktail menus during the month of January for those who are cutting back on alcohol in the new year:

  • The Longleaf Lounge – Raleigh – Cozy up in the Longleaf Hotel’s retro lounge with a low-alcohol, alcohol-free or CBD-infused drink on select Thursday evenings.
  • Alley Twenty Six – Durham – Grab a booze-free hot toddy to warm up the senses, or go for Tiki vibes with the “No Thanks, I’m Driving,” a bright blend of fruit juices and soda.
  • Flight TeaBar – Carrboro – Awaken the senses over delicious tea drinks in the Muse Gallery space.
  • Tenth and Terrace – Raleigh – Enjoy non-alcoholic offerings of the bar’s regular cocktails, including the “Lavender Fields Forever,” a refreshing herbal sipper, and the chai mule, a cozy tea beverage with orange syrup and ginger beer.
  • The Beagle – Pittsboro – Try a cucumber “G&T” or spicy “margarita” from the zero-proof spirits menu to stick to your resolutions.
  • Killjoy – Raleigh – The “Somebunny to Love” features warming spices like ginger and turmeric with carrot and brown sugar for the ultimate cold weather treat.

Krave Kava Bar

If you’re looking for a nonalcoholic pick-me-up, consider Krave Kava Bar, with locations in both Carrboro and Raleigh. Kava is a plant that grows in the South Pacific (the root is the part that’s made into a drink and consumed as an alternative to alcohol), and Krave serves root drinks and teas that produce a relaxing effect, allowing customers to unwind in an alcohol-free bar and lounge environment.

Experience timeless elegance with afternoon tea at Heights House Hotel in Raleigh’s historic Boylan Heights neighborhood. Locals and travelers alike are invited to The Parlor at Heights House Thursdays through Sundays (unless the hotel is hosting a private event that weekend) to savor a curated selection of steeped-to-order Rishi teas and exquisite mini desserts from LucetteGrace, complemented by house-made tea sandwiches. These afternoons offer guests a delightful escape in a historic setting; the chance to explore the pre-Civil War property while enjoying classic teas like earl grey and unexpected flavors such as Patagonia wild guava.

The Durham Hotel

The Durham Hotel’s coffee soda – cold-brew coffee mixed with sugar, vanilla bean, sparkling water and crushed ice and garnished with a fresh lemon peel – is a must-try for coffee and pop lovers alike!

Da Kine’s Kava

Zoey Best and Brent Waffle opened Da Kine’s in Durham in 2020. The bar offers natural, healthy traditional kava, bottled kava, kava mocktails and more. Dive right into the experience with Da Kine’s “Grab The Bull,” the bar’s strongest drink in terms of taste and potency, which produces the relaxing effects of kava quickly. Or start out subtly with Da Kine’s seasonal kava mocktails that are perfect for sipping, such as “The Grass is Greener Lemonade,” a combination of pomegranate, mint, ginger, kava and lemonade.
