Durham County

Book Harvest

This Durham-based nonprofit organization is built on the belief that every child needs books, every parent deserves support and every community thrives on literacy. Note that donations are only accepted Tuesdays and Saturdays from noon to 3 p.m.

Urban Ministries of Durham

Urban Ministries of Durham is a critical resource for community members experiencing hunger and homelessness. The organization wants to ensure that its community receives the items it needs most, so be sure to compare your donations to the ministry’s clothing, toiletry, home goods and food lists before you visit.

The Scrap Exchange

This Bull City staple in the Lakewood Shopping Center is a go-to for artists and other crafty individuals, as well as those seeking affordable, pre-loved toys, tools and materials. Pull up under the blue awning on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday or Saturday between 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., and drop off anything from clothing, fabric and art supplies to housewares, jewelry and musical instruments. Don’t forget to browse its list of “yes please!” and “no thanks” items.

TROSA

This thrift store and Best of Durham winner on North Roxboro Street accepts a wide variety of donated goods, from furniture and clothing to home goods and decor, as long as they’re in good, sellable condition. All sales go toward programs empowering those struggling with substance use. The thrift store’s Durham location is especially known for its picture frame shop, which has provided the community with quality custom framing for more than 20 years. TROSA also offers moving services year-round and Christmas tree stands at the holidays.
